Anna Appelquist Obituary

It is with great shock and sadness that we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Anna Appelquist on Friday, March 22, 2024 at her home in Radville, SK.  Anna had just celebrated her 90th birthday and this milestone was enjoyed many times with family and friends.

Anna was predeceased by her parents Adolf and Astrid Appelquist; her brother Eric Appelquist; nephew Gary Church; and her brother-in-law Winston Church.

She leaves her sister May Church; sister-in-law Marlene VanDeSype (Gerry); niece Sheryl (John) Price and nephews Darell (Kay) Appelquist and Barry (Holli) Appelquist to keep her memory alive. Anna also leaves her cherished great and great-great nieces and nephews, who she took great delight in: Josh Appelquist (Taylor Buckshaw), Kari Appelquist, Alex Price (Anna), Thomas Price, Jade Appelquist (Ty Pederson), Eric Appelquist (Randi Debert), and special great-great nephew Axel Appelquist. Anna was in regular contact with many relatives in Sweden who will also miss her dearly.

Anna was born on November 18, 1933 to Adolf and Astrid Appelquist on the farm near Radville.  She attended Bourassa and Green Valley schools.  After helping out on the farm for several years, she took a hairdressing course at Marvel Beauty School in Regina and worked a number of years for Odilon Prost at Prost’s Beauty Salon in Radville.  She then moved to Moose Jaw and was employed by Joyner’s Department Store selling footwear for 13 years before moving to Weyburn.  Amazingly, she sold shoes for another 28½ years at McDonald’s Shoes in Weyburn.  Friendly by nature, she knew everyone in town and what your shoe size was!  Anna retired in 2002, moving home to Radville to care for her mom, Astrid before Astrid’s passing in 2004.  Anna continued to live in the Appelquist home in Radville enjoying yard work, baking, reading, sports on TV (like her dad).  She was an active volunteer at the Marian Health Centre, coordinated Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Radville United Church.

Her presence and contagious smile will be profoundly missed and her memory will forever be cherished.  Her kindness, positivity, stubborn determination and grit is an example for all of us to follow.  She never gave up and taught us to love life everyday.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. from the Radville United Church, Radville, SK.

The family would like to thank Anna’s support circle of close friends, Merle and Gordon Young and Linda Bolton for helping Anna stay independent and live in her own home until her passing.  Thanks also to the RCMP members and ambulance attendants for their care and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, for family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Anna may be made to the Radville Marian Health Centre, Box 310, Radville, SK, S0C 2G0 or the Radville United Church, Box 445, Radville, SK, S0C 2G0.
