Arthur (Art) Hennie Obituary

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Arthur (Artie) William Hennie on Monday, July 19, 2021 at the age of 89 years.

Artie was born in Yellow Grass, SK on August 19, 1931. He is predeceased by his parents William and Martha Hennie, brother Wally Hennie, sister Ella Smith, and granddaughter Erin Westling (Chopper).

Artie is survived by his loving wife Dorothy of 68 years, daughter Terry (Ross) Benson, daughter Karen (Terry) Westling, son Doug (Sheila) Hennie, daughter Vicky Hennie, daughter Leslie Epp, 12 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, sister Helene Scurfield, brother Sam Hennie, sister Myrna (Johnny) McIver, brother Earl (Sharon) Hennie, brother-in-law and lifelong friend Ron Lautenslager, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends.

Artie’s work life included farming with his Dad, grave topper, orderly at the Saskatchewan hospital and roughneck. He worked at Mainil’s in Weyburn as well but he was most widely known as an accomplished cat skinner for the R.M. of Scott having built many of the roads in the area.

Artie was a skilled carpenter, plumber, electrician and machinist. He could fix or build anything and if the tool he needed didn’t exist, he’d build that too. One of his many beautiful projects was a horse-drawn buggy he built from the ground up. In his retirement Artie’s small motor repair business kept him very busy and he enjoyed countless visits from passersby at his shop.

Artie loved the community of Yellow Grass. He played hockey for the Wheat Kings, he was an original member of the Lion’s Club, he sat on Town Council and was a Rink Board member. He was integral in the building of the Yellow Grass Drop-In centre and helped build the Yellow Grass Communiplex.

Artie was an avid hunter and fisherman and he loved playing cards with family and friends and he loved a good slot machine at the casino. His sense of humor and original one-liners made everyone roar with laughter. Artie’s favorite pastime of all was when ‘Mom’ got out the guitar for a sing song.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held at the Yellow Grass Cemetery, Yellow Grass, SK on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. with funeral celebrant Judy Beck.  A community lunch was held at the Yellow Grass Communiplex, Yellow Grass, SK following the service.

In lieu of flowers charitable donations can be made in Artie’s name to the Yellow Grass United Lutheran Partnership, Box 159, Yellow Grass, SK, S0G 5J0 or the Parkway Lodge, 420 ~ 8th Avenue S, Weyburn, SK, S4H 2N3 or a charity of choice.
