Carol Sue Thomas

Carol Sue Thomas, (nee Boyd) was born in Yorkton, SK on September 2, 1948 to Jim and Elsie Boyd and sadly passed away July 29, 2022.

Carol was predeceased by her parents, Elsie and James Boyd; her husband, Larry (2010); and baby Boyd Thomas.

She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life: her daughter Cheryl (Steve) Hutt of Beaubier, SK ; her son Blake (Deanna) Thomas of Red Deer, AB, and daughter Rachelle (Jeff) Perry of Duncan, BC;  grandchildren: Teleana-Joe Hutt, Dalton Thomas, Zayn (Nattie) Hutt, Rhett (Paige) Hutt, Ty Hutt, Bailey Thomas, Devin Thomas-Perry, McKinley Thomas-Perry and Kendall Thomas; great-grandchildren: Abigail, Madison, Kolter and baby Hutt due in February; her sisters: Barbara Copeland, Jeannie Schlacter, Jacquie Boyd and Joan Goldhawk (Shannon Plante); as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. 

Carol was the second of five girls.  Her Grandpa Boyd lived with them.  He was hard of hearing and could not figure out why she would be named Carl – a boy’s name.

Living on the outskirts of town, in a tight knit neighborhood of five families, the kids took care of each other, played together and got into trouble together.  Carol was the cutest little platinum blonde and definitely full of mischief.  She was known for climbing trees, skating on the slough and tobogganing down Patrick’s hill where hopefully one stopped before reaching the highway.

Birthday parties were always a big deal; lots of kids, lots of fun and lots of presents.  The whole class at school was invited as well as all the neighbors.  One year in particular stirred jealousy in the hearts of some when Grandpa Boyd bough Carol red rubber boots and a red tricycle for her party held under the famous maple trees at Uncle Hughie’s and Aunt Squeak’s house across the street.

She was her Dad’s “Hired Hand.”  Carol built muscles when her Dad decided to dig out the basement through the tiniest basement window ever.  She hauled many pails of dirt away from that window.  Often times she had the joy of hauling a pail of water back from her Uncle’s well across the street.  By the time her parents decided to build their new home Carol had a good handle on the workings of a wheelbarrow which made things easier. 

As a child, Carol had a stutter and was the only one of the Boyd girls to go to kindergarten where she overcame it.  She attended Simpson School and later the Yorkton Collegiate Institute where she graduated Grade 12.  She then furthered her education taking Psychiatric Nursing training in Weyburn and graduated in 1967.

Barbara, her older sister and Carol were 14 months apart and their Mother had her hands full especially, since the two girls were “Attached at the hip.”  Along with a neighbor, Claudette Forseth, they were The Three Musketeers.

Carol was baptized in the United Church and attended Sunday School.  She was an explorer and enjoyed the uniform and the fun events the church provided.  She attended Camp McKay with the church group.  As an adolescent, she was a member of Job’s Daughters when it was first established in Yorkton.  After moving to Weyburn, she joined Eastern Star where she enjoyed the support of her sisters in Star.

Larry Thomas of Weyburn and Carol were married in Yorkton on June 17, 1967.  They made their home in Weyburn where three wonderful children were added to their family.  She also had over 20 years of service in health care in Weyburn.  A few places Carol worked at were the Souris Valley, Weyburn General Hospital, Souris School as secretary and at Sears.  Carol had a travelling spirit and knew her province well, and always willing provided tips on sights to see and places to go.  She travelled to England with her Mother and her sister Jeannie to see aunts, uncles and cousins and to become more familiar with where her Mother grew up.  She welcomed her aunts, uncle and cousins when they visited Canada.

Some of Carol’s favorite trips included packing up the grandkids and heading up to the cabin at Little Bear Lake with Larry.  They would always stop at A&W for the Bacon n’ eggers.  Along with the “tin crow’ flights out of BC with Teleana to explore Vancouver Island. 

Being creative was an objective of Carol’s.  She recently took up wood carving, where she so appreciated the constant help from experienced wood workers.  The library offered her an outlet for developing new craft talents which she shared with others.  Rachelle and Carol enjoyed many years of scrapbooking and spent way too much money on the newest item they could find.  One thing you always knew when you came to Carol’s house is you would never go home hungry. She made the best scrambled egg sandwich, puffed wheat cake, sugar cookies, poppy seed loaf, shortbread cookies, cabbage rolls, chili and turkey dinners.

One of Carol’s favorite sayings was, “You never can tell.”

Carol achieved many first in her family even though she was the second born:

First and only one to play the bagpipes and join an all male Legion Band
First to leave home
First to get married
First to be a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Carol will never leave us.  She is always in our hearts and thoughts.  She will be missed.

A Service of Remembrance was held on Saturday, August 6, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas officiating. Urn Bearers were Dalton Thomas and Blake Thomas. Interment will be held at a later date.

A reception was held  following the service at RD Family Funeral Chapel, as well as an open invitation from Carol’s family to stop over at the house on 903 ~ 4th Street S, Weyburn, SK for fellowship and refreshments.
