Ivy Kerr Obituary

Ivy was born on March 27, 1923 on a farm in the Yellow Grass district, the eldest child of Martin and Emma Eberhardt. She passed away peacefully in Saskatoon, SK on January 13, 2022 with her family by her side.

Ivy grew up in Lang, SK and after graduation she attended Normal School in Regina, SK . From a young age she wanted to be a teacher, and as a little girl her favorite pastime was ‘’playing school.”  Her first teaching position was at Soda Lake country school near Radville. She told wonderful tales of her adventure there as a young 19 year- old living alone in the teacherage which had no power or running water. One of her responsibilities was to make fires in the school, a task with which she had little experience. The surrounding community was made up of French-Canadian families and she was so grateful for the way they welcomed her and looked out for her welfare.

Ivy married Jim Kerr in 1947 and they had three children; Beverly, Colin and Marsha. She was a very supportive farm wife and when the children were older, she returned to teaching and completed her career with 8 years of service in Milestone and 10 years of service in Yellow Grass. She was a dedicated teacher and was highly regarded in both communities.

After retirement, she and Jim took part in many activities at the Golden Harvest Centre. Ivy spent the summers caring for her beautiful yard and bountiful garden. In the winter, she and Jim travelled to Mesa and she spoke of those years as some of the happiest of her life. There was finally time to socialize and enjoy many crafts.

Family was of utmost importance to Ivy and she provided support and care for her elderly mother, Emma and was always there for her own three children. She adored her five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

In 2019, she moved to Luther Tower in Saskatoon where she could be closer to her daughters and have better access to medical care.

Ivy will be deeply missed by her three children; Beverly (Hugh Townsend), Colin, Marsha (Lyell Allen); daughter-in-law Debbie; five grandchildren; Jennifer (Rocky Campbell), Eve (Curtis Amisich), Holly, Rob (Lorianne), and Joshua (Karina Ascunce); two great-grandchildren; Huxley Townsend and Isla Amisich; brother-in-law; Lyle Borys; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband Jim; her parents Martin and Emma Eberhardt, her brothers Arnold and Walter and her sister Valerie Borys.

At Ivy’s  request, there will be no funeral. Internment will take place beside Jim at a later date in the Yellow Grass Cemetery, Yellow Grass.

In lieu of flowers, for family and friends so wishing, charitable donations in memory of Ivy may be made to Yellow Grass United Lutheran Partnership, Box 159, Yellow Grass, SK, S0G 5J0.
