Pearl Sophie Hoimyr

Pearl Sophie Hoimyr, late of Radville, SK passed away on January 12, 2022 at the age of 96 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Alvern Hoimyr; her parents, Robert and Agnes Johnson; her siblings: Peter, Alice, Gary and Denis.

Pearl is survived by: her son Lyle (Judy) Hoimyr and family: Mark (Laura) Hoimyr and children [Anna, Jeremy], Tannis (Derek) Axten and children [Kate, Brock], Lee Ann (Ivan) Odland and children, [Shawn and Tyler]; son Randy (Roberta) Hoimyr and children Jared, Kimberly (Jesse) Hemm and son Jasper; daughter Cheryl Hoimyr; son Wade (Melanie) Hoimyr and children, Michelle and her son LeeRoy, Wyatt; as well as numerous nieces and  nephews.

Pearl was born to Agnes and Robert Johnson on September 19, 1925 at the family farm 6 miles south of Lake Alma.  Her birth was attended by her Grandma Johnson, who had been a nurse in Norway.

She attended school in the one room Overland School.  She or her brother Peter drove themselves and their siblings to schoolby horse and cart or sleigh in the winter.As she got older she enjoyed helping out during threshing time for neighbours and in 1945 and 1946 worked for Mrs.Enger at the post office in Lake Alma.  At that time the mail came twice a week by train.

Pearl married Alvern Hoimyr in March of 1947 in Plentywood, Montana.  After being married they moved to the ‘old Rudolph Anderson’ place.  Many had tried but failed to make a go of this place, in part, due to lack of water.  Austin Olson witched for water and a well was located and drilled in the yard.  They always had plenty of water. 

In the early years although the house was small, it was always busy. Pearl and Alvern welcomed her brother Gary and sister Alice to stay with them while attending school in Lake Alma.

Pearl and Alvern had four children, Lyle, Randy, Cheryl and Wade. Lyle was born in the Gladmar Hospital while the remaining children were born in Radville. She was the best Mom, a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother.

Pearl and Alvern were thoughtful planners of where buildings, trees and gardens would be located in the farm yard.  Many years more than 10,000 trees would be planted in a year. This was a family activity.  Pearl made much use of the plentiful water as she kept two big gardens which were one of the first things you saw when entering the farm yard. Many commented on how attractive her garden was, as it was always thoughtfully laid out and had many flowers and bordering berry bushes.  She canned and froze vegetables and made jam, jellies and syrups from the many different berries.  In the summer, she and later her children spent many hours working in the garden.  She was always happy to share garden produce with friends and family. 

Pearl was an exceptional cook and baker. Donuts and lefsa were family favorites. For many years she enjoyed organizing or just helping out in the kitchen at the church, hall or curling rink for community events.  Last minute guests were never a problem for her.  She was always happy to offer a meal and coffee was always on. 

During their years together on the farm Pearl and Alvern expanded the farm to include some land from both their families, and received the Century Family Farm Award recognizing 100 years of continuous family farm operations by both the Hoimyr and Johnson families. Over the years Pearl and Alvern raised cattle, pigs, chickens, milked cows and shipped cream as well as farming grains.   The farm, later named Rocky Valley Ranch would be a focal point for generations of the family with siblings, nieces, nephews and extended family spending time with them over the years. Pearl loved family and hosted them often. Holidays, Saturday night family visits, and reunions were common events lovingly remembered by her family.

A Private Family and Relatives Service of Remembrance was held on Friday, January 21, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, 1825 First Avenue NE, Weyburn, SK with Pastor Carla Blakley officiating.  Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance.  Interment followed at the Saron Cemetery, Lake Alma, SK.
